The resistance of cultivars to diseases and plagues is of essential importance for sustainable agriculture. In the selection phase, HLB tests seedlings and cultivars for resistance to diseases and pests such as potato cyst nematodes, root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne chitwoodi), potato wart disease (Synchytrium endobioticum), Phytophthora, Alternaria, storage diseases (Fusarium spp., Phoma, silver scurf) and drought stress. We are the only knowledge institute in the Netherlands accredited by the NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) to perform resistance research on quarantine diseases such as potato cyst nematodes (Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida) and potato wart disease (Synchytrium endobioticum). HLB also maintains inoculum of various populations and propagates these for use in resistance research.
